Comics You Need to Read – Scalped

17May10

Got a minute?  Good, sit down, relax, and I’ll relate to you the story of a guy by the name of Dashiell Bad Horse.

Dash left the Prairie Rose Indian reservation fifteen years ago.  It’s a horrible place with rampant poverty and a group of people with little to no hope for their future, why would anyone want to stay there, after all?  What did he do when he left?  No one knows, exactly.  It seems he got in more than a few fights, because now he’s back, and he’s very unhappy and pretty much beating the snot out of anyone who crosses him.  His story is at the heart of the comic book, Scalped.

In Scalped, Dash Bad Horse is stuck square in the middle of the tradtional Indians on the reservation who seek to preserve their history, the organized crime boss who is trying to open a casino on the rez, and the FBI agent sniffing around the edges with an agenda of his own.

Then there’s Diesel.  My favorite character in the book.  He’s one-sixteenth Kickapoo, but no one has ever given him the respect he feels he deserves, so he beats it out of everyone he meets.  He’s got his own plans for the rez, and don’t get in his way.

Scalped is my favorite monthly book on the stands right now.  It’s crime noir set on an Indian reservation.  It’s a story about dirty people doing dirty things and there are no good guys.  There isn’t someone who will come out on top, there is just someone who will hit the ground last.  When I say Dash is at the heart of the story of Scalped, that heart is a withered, blackened thing that is rotten through and through.  If you’re looking for a feel good affirmation of humanity, look elsewhere.  If you’re looking for a great character study set in a unique setting, this is the book for you.  I know I’m reading a good crime noir story when I feel like I need to wash my hands after I put the book down, and after reading a Scalped story, I feel like I need to take a bath.  It’s fantastic.

If you aren’t reading Scalped yet, you should be.  Simple as that.  Do yourself a favor, and go read the first issue for free here (courtesy of DC Comics), then pick up the rest of the series.  You won’t regret it.

Just have some soap nearby for your hands afterwards.
